Conclusions WWF Policy Brief 2011

circle hooks.JPGLast week WWF has published a report analyzing, proving and recommending the use of Circle hooks by longline fisheries in the Coral Triangle region.

Some of the conclusions from this report are that the use of circle hooks;

  • Reduces hooking rates of turtles (by 80%)

  • Improves post-hook survival of turtles

  • Allows higher catch rate of targeted species

  • Offers better post-hook survival of  tuna, leading to higher quality seafood.

  • Combined with appropriate bait, skilled de-hooking techniques and on-board observers form an essential weapon to reduce by-catch

In cooperation with WWF we are a proud promoter of C-hook use in longline fisheries in the Coral triangle region. By sponsoring and training local fishermen we aim for a responsible, sustainable and high quality product to the benefit of our suppliers and customers.
By buying our sustainable tuna you also support this project.
